What we collect

We collect three kinds of data, and nothing beyond them.

• Analytics data. When you visit why.help, our analytics provider records the page viewed, a general geographic region, device type, and referring site. This runs through [name your analytics tool] and is reported to us in aggregate. We do not see your name, your exact address, or a persistent profile tied to you as an individual.
• Contact form submissions. If you use the contact form, we collect whatever you type into it, including your email address if you provide one. We use it only to respond to you.
• Cookies. Some cookies are required for the site to function. Others support analytics and are optional. See the cookies section below for the full breakdown and how to turn them off.

What we don't collect

We do not require an account to read this site. We do not ask for your real name, date of birth, or financial details anywhere on why.help. We do not track you across other websites, and we do not build advertising profiles. If you never use the contact form, we have no way to identify you as an individual person.

You can decline analytics cookies through the banner shown on your first visit, or block cookies entirely through your browser settings. The site remains fully readable either way.

Third-party links

Pages on why.help sometimes link out to hotlines, treatment providers, government agencies, or other outside resources. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control. Reading this policy tells you about why.help; it does not tell you how a linked site handles your information, so check their own privacy policy before sharing anything with them.

Your choices

You can decline analytics cookies, browse the entire site without providing any personal information, and request access to or deletion of anything you have sent us. If you are covered by the GDPR (generally, if you are in the European Economic Area or the UK), you have the right to access, correct, delete, or export any personal data we hold about you, and the right to object to certain processing. If you are a California resident, the CCPA and CPRA give you similar rights: to know what personal information is collected, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of on that front, but you can still exercise your access and deletion rights.

How long do you keep this information?

Aggregate analytics data is retained by [name your analytics tool] according to their standard retention window, which we review periodically. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to respond to you and to maintain a record of correspondence, after which they are deleted on a routine schedule.

What about children's privacy?

why.help is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information through the contact form, email [contact email] and we will remove it.

To make any request about your data, including access or deletion, email [contact email]. Because we usually have no personal data on you beyond a contact form message, most requests are resolved quickly.

How will you know if this policy changes?

If we make a material change to this policy, we will update the "last modified" date at the top of this page and note the change on the page itself. We do not send notice by email unless you have previously written to us, since we generally do not have your email address to send it to.
