About

We built the site we needed and couldn't find

Written By Why.Help. Last reviewed . 3 min read.

The short answer

why.help started from a simple, frustrating problem: when you search for help with gambling addiction, most of what comes up is either a wall of clinical jargon or a page designed to funnel you into one specific paid program. Almost nothing was written by someone who actually understood what the 3am spiral feels like, or what it's like to sit across from someone you love and not know what to say.

Key points

  • why.help was started by someone with 25 years of personal gambling history, not a marketing team.
  • The site explains and points you to help. It does not diagnose or treat anyone.
  • We do not accept referral fees from treatment centers.
  • The site is independently funded and takes no money from treatment centers, sportsbooks, or casinos.
  • Health content is checked against current public health sources before it publishes.

This site is built and maintained by people working directly in recovery coaching and addiction support - not a content agency, not a treatment marketing firm. That background shapes everything here: the resources we list, the language we use, and the things we refuse to do (like using casino imagery or manufactured urgency to get you to click).

What we do and don't do

We write and curate information on gambling addiction, treatment options, insurance, and recovery support. We don't diagnose anyone through this website, we don't replace a licensed clinician, and we're upfront everywhere on this site about that line. What we can do is get you oriented fast, so that when you do talk to a professional, a hotline, or a support group, you're not starting from zero.

How this site stays accurate

Every page in our Get Help section is checked against current public health data and, where relevant, current law (like insurance parity requirements). We date-stamp updates and explain our process fully on the Editorial Standards page.

Why does this site exist?

This site is written by someone in recovery. I gambled for most of my adult life, close to 25 years. The last 15 of those years were the aggressive ones: bigger bets, longer sessions, more lies to the people around me about where the money went. I am not writing that sentence for sympathy. I am writing it because when I was in the middle of it, almost everything I found online was either a clinical brochure written for someone else, or a treatment center ad dressed up as an article.

I wanted something that talked to me the way a person talks, not the way a pamphlet talks. Something that told me what was actually happening in my head when I chased a loss, what my options really were, and what they would really cost, without trying to sell me a bed in a facility at the same time. That resource did not exist, at least not one I could find at two in the morning, awake, doing math on money I did not have.

So I built it. why.help is the site I needed. It is written in plain language, checked against public health sources, and kept separate from anyone who profits from where you end up getting treatment. If you are reading this at your own two-in-the-morning moment, that is who this is for.

Who writes this?

Every page here is written by someone in recovery. Not a content agency, not a treatment marketer. The person writing has lived the problem being described and has spent years in recovery work since.

We are not clinicians, and we never present ourselves as clinicians. Anything clinical on this site is drawn from published sources like the National Council on Problem Gambling and SAMHSA, and cited on the page so you can check it yourself.

How do we make money?

This is worth stating plainly instead of tucking into a footer. why.help is independently funded by the person who runs it. There are no ads, no sponsored listings, and no referral fees. We do not accept payment from treatment centers, sportsbooks, or casinos in exchange for coverage or placement. If that ever changes, this page will say so, with the same directness.

How is this content reviewed?

Every health-related page is drafted first, then every factual claim is checked against a primary public health source before it goes live. Claims that rely on a statistic or a study are either sourced directly or flagged as unverified until they can be. You can read the full process, including how corrections get made, on our editorial standards page.

How do you reach us?

If you have a correction, a question, or something you think we got wrong, use the contact page. A real person reads every message.
